Malaria facts and tips for young children
Malaria is basically caused by the female anopheles mosquito. They carry parasites from one infected person to another when they bite us. When the parasites gets into our blood, it infects the red blood cells. The signs of this very bad disease include fever, headache, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms. It usually begins to show after 9 days of the bite.
Worldwide, malaria causes around 225 million illnesses and 781,000 deaths annually. Many children die of malaria everyday in Africa. It is very common in African communities and in areas with high humidity, moisture and high temperatures.
Malaria can be treated if an infected person visits the hospital, health center or clinic early enough. A blood test can also show if you have the parasites.
Malaria be prevented. Sleeping in a mosquito net, using mosquito treated curtains, gels and avoiding mosquito bites can help prevent this bad disease. Sometimes there is very little you can do to prevent mosquito bites especially in many living communities close to stagnant water bodies.
